“Create in me a clean heat, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” -Psalm 51: 10
As we enter the holy season of Lent, we begin on a sacred journey of reflection, prayer, and repentance. Ash Wednesday, which falls in March, marks the beginning of this pilgrimage – a time to pause, examine our hears, and draw closer to God. The psalmist reminds us, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90: 12). Lent calls us to do just that – to reflect on our mortality, the meaning of life and death, and our relationship with the One who holds our past, present, and future.
Lately, I have found myself thinking more about life and death. The passing of my beloved father and mother-in-law has left an empty space in my heart, and, as a church, we have also mourned the loss of many faithful members. Their absence is deeply felt, and we long for the day when we will be reunited in God’s eternal presence. Yet, even in the midst of grief, we recognize the abundant blessings that surround us – family, friends, a loving faith community, and the grace of God that carries us through each season of life. Even the difficult days, when viewed through the lens of faith, become part of a greater story of redemption.
Death is a journey none of us have traveled before. For some, it comes unexpectedly; for others, it approaches slowly but surely. Yet, as follower of Christ, we do not face it with fear. Jesus assures us, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will love, even though they die” (John 11: 25) Though the process of dying may be painful, we trust in the promise that beyond this life, there is new life – one prepared for us by our Savior.
As we begin our Lenten journey on March 5th, I invite you to consider what spiritual discipline you will embrace. Will you set aside more time for prayer? Serve those in need? Deepen your study of Scripture? Whatever you choose, may it be a meaningful practice that brings you closer to God. And when Easter morning dawns, may we all find ourselves renewed in spirit, strengthened in faith, and transformed by the love of Christ.
May the grace of God sustain you in this holy season.
Blessings on your Lenten journey!
