What Does Church Sell?

What Does Church Sell?

One of the most famous vacation destinations is Disney, popular in all seasons.  Disney is a family friendly destination where people of all ages can experience joy, wonder, and immersive storytelling.  Sam and I once visited Disney in Florida for a summer vacation.  Since we didn’t have enough time to visit all four theme parks, we decided to see Epcot.  We enjoyed walking, watching and listening to the various cultural expressions there.  It was a happy memory.  I’d love to visit Disney again to experience the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom someday.

Disney’s purpose is clear:  to bring happiness to people.  The core values of Disney are well integrated into the company’s training programs.  An instructor asks new employees, “McDonald’s makes hamburgers.  What does Disney make?”  The new employees respond, “We make people happy.”  The instructor then says, “That’s correct.  Disney sells happiness.  It doesn’t matter who the person is, what job they have, or what their skin color is.  We work to make people happy.  No one is hired just to work.  We are all cast in roles for the ‘show.'”

McDonald’s makes hamburgers.  Disney sells happiness.  What does church sell?  The church sells Jesus and His Gospel.  In other words, the church offers meaning, community, and hope.  The church provides people with a sense of purpose and understanding about the meaning of life, their place in the world, and the significance of their actions and relationships.  The church offers a sense of belonging and connection, creating a supportive community where individuals can find friendship, support, and a sense of family.  The church gives people hope, offering reassurance and comfort in times of trouble, and a positive outlook for the future, both in this life and the next.  These elements address deep human needs and are central to the church’s mission and ministry.  Are we selling the right stuff as a church?

Summer is a vacation season, but the mission and ministry of the church don’t stop providing “Meaning, Community, and Hope” through Jesus Christ.  Keep Jesus in first place during this season of fun, relaxation, and enjoying nature with family.  May God bless you!
